Creating conditions and spaces for deep peace
Colleen Mac Dougall, PhD, Peace Psychologist
VISION
Something so deep and profound moving in us that we are ready to say:
“Yes, we will lay down our walls, weapons, and projections of fear.”
DEEP PEACE
Deep peace is an experience of personal and collective congruence where we consciously and progressively bring into harmony, proportion, and deep relatedness what we value, believe, feel strongly about, and act upon.
Deep peace is:
- More than a move to the middle ground of compromise; it is a transformation of sight, understanding, will, and love.
- Spiritual in essence, supporting us and having the power to profoundly shift social, cultural, religious, economic, and political trajectories.
- Fluid, reflective, self-examining, timely, and responsive to both historic and present contexts (even religious ones) that must remain fluid, even if fragile.
- Inclusive, non-warring, first ground and sacred ground that opens space where defenses of fear and division are progressively released and a new field is seeded with what is most essentially sought – those things that hold familiar resonance and hope
- Created in the seeking by those seeking it.
- A phenomenological-hermeneutic process – re-examining and exploring new interpretations of language that has been usurped (e.g., “homeland,” “identity,” “justice,” “peace”).
- Painful, freeing, disturbing, courageous, and powerful – seeding into places opened by acts of sacrifice and military valour sensibilities of soul that breed hope and cause a deeper sense of personal, racial, cultural, religious, and national purpose to be born.
